Behind the Hack: The Importance of Software Updates & Patches

One of the easiest ways that hackers break into business computer networks is out-of-date and non-updated technology. It’s so easy to minimize the window or click the “Remind Me Later” button, especially when you’re in the middle of a task on your computer. We think, “what’s the worst that can happen?”
We can show you – from the hacker’s point of view.
We partnered with a certified hacker to break into our computer using an EternalBlue attack. EternalBlue is an exploit that allows cyber threat actors to remotely execute arbitrary code and gain access into a network and all devices connected to it. Due to EternalBlue’s ability to compromise networks, if one device is infected by malware via EternalBlue, every device connected to the network is at risk, making a recovery very difficult.
In this video, the hacker uses special monitoring software to identify machines that have not been updated. He establishes his connection by linking IP addresses and ports. Then with a simple command, he’s in. Watch as he shows you his step-by-step procedure to get access.
The result?
He can now view all the private credentials used to access the network, allowing the hacker to do whatever he wants:
- launch a further attack
- steal and lock your data
- monitor your screen
- connect keystrokes
- spy on you via your webcam
The Solution
Software updates are critical to the safety of your business network. By providing revisions to previously tested software, the updates repair security holes, add in new features, and remove outdated ones.
It’s important to remember that one out-of-date computer can ruin the network for everyone. For this reason, it is a good idea to implement a company policy for updating machines and devices. Enable automatic software updates whenever possible to ensure that they are installed as quickly as possible. Avoid software updates on untrusted networks.
